From a distance a Tough Guy --
but up close, a true lover-boy...

July 14, 2001 -- It is with a sad and aching heart that I write this morning. Our handsome, regal boy, Slate, passed away in his sleep at the hospital Friday morning, July 13, 2001, due to complications arising from his bouts with chronic renal failure, diabetes, an infection and hypertension.

Slate was a character. He most likely spent the first decade of his life on the streets, where he must have developed his trademark "tough guy" attitude. For the next five and a half years he resided at the cat shelter waiting... waiting for just the right home. Slate had the distinction of having the longest continuous stay there.

While working at the shelter I felt a special bond developing with Slate. While others were around he'd be grumpy and swat at you if you dared to even looked at him. Many times after closing time, however, he'd apparently feel more comfortable and come out of his room to wander through the shelter and check things out. He'd even jump on my lap now and then as I worked at the computer. Over time, we would end up playing together on the floor. More than once I laughed so hard I cried!

Finally, in May of 1999, we adopted Slate and he came home with us. He spent his last two years as a Dewey and during those 26 months Slate brought a new level of class and dignity, tremendous joy and love, and an abundance of smiles and laughter to our home. He loved drinking water from his water mug. It always had to be fresh, too. Several times a day he'd come to me and say, "Wah-WAH!" His 'I want water' meow was different than all his other meows. It most definitely was, "Wah-WAH!" He loved his midnight snacks of Fancy Feast. He loved laying in the catnapper by the window and soaking up rays of sunshine. He loved being a part of our family and we felt blessed to have him.

His passing made it yet another difficult time for us (now having lost four cats in five months), but Slate is at peace and he suffers no more. In memory of Slate, we ask that everyone please keep all the beautiful kitties of the world in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.

Peace, Love and Serenity to All
